FuturLab has been reviving the retro shooter in recent years and engaging in genre-bending craziness. While playing through their latest game for our PS4 Velocity 2X review, I have found a game that screams greatness and ingenuity for all games moving forward. Fasten your seat belts as we blast off for FuturLabs.

Velocity 2X Review | Introduction

A game that encourages you to push the envelope with your twitch reflexes, platforming skills, and even your puzzle solving abilities–Velocity 2X shows us that there is still design space for originality in the shooter genre. The game seems simple at first, but the intensity level accelerates as more intricate game mechanics and controls are revealed to you. With a few teleporting controls and clever platforming level design, Velocity 2X is the first successful shooter/platformer/puzzler I have played. Imagine Metroid without the backtracking or Galaga and Gradius having a puzzle-solving love child. An arcade favorite game of mine when I was ten, Solar Warrior (aka Xain’d Sleena), came to mind when I first started playing this game. However, Velocity 2X is way, way more deeper than that.

Velocity 2X Review | Controls

The Velocity 2X control scheme seems rather complex at first. FuturLab intelligently unlocks your abilities across several missions so that you get a proper introduction to each one. Newcomers to the Velocity series will have to adjust to the controls. The game is designed to be a speed runner’s dream, but getting acquainted to the controls or trying to push the envelope will cause some fumbling around at first. Knowing the control scheme in and out will eventually help you make decisions on the fly.

Velocity 2X Review

On Foot Controls

Left Stick: move.

Right Stick: 360 degree shooting.

R1/R2: sprint (can not shoot while sprinting).

X button: jump. Holding the left stick down and the X button turns into a low slide and small openings. You can teledash during the slide

Square button: teledash (hold the button to enable aiming your teledash, then release it to teleport). The teledash is your primary defense versus enemy soldiers and traps in the platforming levels. Sometimes you will be speeding towards death and only a teleport or teledash will save you.

Circle button: rifle shot.

Triangle button: 1) tap the button quickly to drop a telepod. 2) double tap the button to go back to the last telepod you dropped. 3) hold the button down to enable throwing a telepod while aiming with the left stick, then let go of the button to toss it. Getting creative with teleporting is how you avoid backtracking and certain traps in this game. You will be pushed to use your wits and plan your teleports. 4) you can pick up a telepod by standing near it and holding the triangle button.

L1: map. In the map mode you can select any of the telepods you have dropped to teleport to the them.

L2: teleport.

Velocity 2X Review | Replay Value

The game uses a scoring system to award experience points. All levels beyond the first are unlocked once you achieve the prerequisite experience to play it. You will have to revisit lower levels and push yourself to complete a level fast, and then maybe come back to it again and do a more completionist style play-through for more points to unlock later levels. While this brings new strategy and intensity to future playthroughs, sometimes you just don’t want to go back and play certain ones anymore. Once you have unlocked all the levels, this issue goes away. For better and for worse, the game has a heavy emphasis on repetitive score attack and time attack runs. The fact the game gives you powerful speed boosts and teleportation tools makes future playthroughs more bearable.

Velocity 2X Review | Rating

I highly recommend this game for all classic Metroid & side-scrolling shooter fans. This game has great value for the player who is looking for something replayable, high-speed and responsive. Although the controls can seem awkward at first, they lend to making a rewarding game where your gains in skill can be measured. Give Velocity 2X a try.
