10. Tales of Phantasia | The Top 10 SNES Games
There are many games I considered for the bottom spot on this list. Yoshi’s Island, F-Zero, NBA Jam, and WWF Royal Rumble were all among my initial shortlist. However, the amount of fun I had playing this game edged those out. Tales of Phantasia is the very first installment in Namco’s “Tales” series and the best in my opinion. I have played two versions of this game, a fan translated version of the original Super Famicom version and the GBA port. The music was okay, the story was about time travel (a pseudo-recurring theme in this list), and the characters were intriguing and likable. What set this game apart from others in this genre was the Linear Motion Battle System. It’s just like future titles in the series (Symphonia, Abyss, Xillia, etc.), except the battles were conducted on a 2D plane. I find it easier to track and combo enemies on a 2D plane rather than its 3D successors. The summons in this game were also cool and powerful. When I found this gem in my teenage years, I was hooked. The fan translation version’s dialogue is for a slightly older crowd than the GBA’s English translation. This issue is insignificant as I am recommending this game for the combat.
